Rainy Day Hair Guide: How to Care for Your Hair & Extensions in Wet Weather

With all the rain we’ve been having lately, I’ve been thinking about how to help my clients to best protect their hair and styles.

Between humidity, moisture, and constant up and down weather changes, your hair is working overtime. The good news is you don’t need to fight it: you just need to adjust how you care for your hair in the meantime.

Here’s exactly what I recommend to keep your hair smooth, manageable, and low-maintenance during rainy weather.

What Rainy Weather Is Actually Doing to Your Hair

Even if you’re not getting caught in the rain, the moisture in the air alone can affect your hair:

  • Humidity causes frizz

  • Damp air can make styles fall faster

  • Moisture can loosen curls or blowouts

  • Extensions can feel heavier or slightly more prone to tangling

This is why your hair might feel harder to control lately, even if your routine hasn’t changed.

The Goal: Work With the Weather, Not Against It

Trying to maintain a super polished, high maintenance style in rainy weather usually leads to frustration.

Instead, think:

  • Softer, more natural texture

  • Styles that can handle a little movement

  • Low-maintenance, controlled looks

Start With the Right Prep

Rainy weather prep starts before you even leave the house.

  • Use a smoothing or anti-frizz product before styling

  • Avoid overloading your hair with heavy products that may get sticky

  • Make sure your hair is fully dry before going outside

Even slightly damp hair can lead to instant frizz as it dries.

If You Get Caught in the Rain

It happens, and it doesn’t have to ruin your hair.

  • Gently brush through once you’re inside (starting at the ends)

  • Don’t let wet sections sit tangled

  • Smooth a small amount of oil or serum through the ends

  • Restyle minimally instead of overworking it, or opt for a gentle updo

For extension clients, the biggest thing is avoiding tangling as the hair dries.

Protective Styles Are Your Best Friend

On rainy days, simple styles go a long way:

  • Loose braids

  • A bun or sleek ponytail

  • Soft waves and natural textures instead of tight curls

These styles hold better in moisture and keep your hair controlled without fighting the weather.

When Your Hair Starts Feeling Off

If your hair has been feeling extra dry, tangled, or harder to style lately, it might need a reset:

  • Light clarifying treatment to remove buildup

  • Hydrating mask to rebalance moisture

  • A trim or extension maintenance if you’re due

But sometimes it’s not your routine, it’s just the season and we can easily make an adjustment to match.

Rainy weather doesn’t have to ruin your hair: it just requires a small shift in how you approach it.

A few simple adjustments can make your hair feel so much more manageable day-to-day.
