đș Travel Hair Diaries: How to Care for Your Hair & Extensions While Traveling
Thereâs nothing better than being on a tropical vacation. You have the sun, ocean, slower mornings⊠and a break from your normal routine.
But if you have extensions or color youâve invested in, travel (especially somewhere tropical) can be a lot on your hair if youâre not prepared.
I just got back from a trip, and it felt like the perfect reminder that you donât need to sacrifice your hair to enjoy your vacation. You just need to be a little intentional.
Hereâs exactly what I recommend to my clients (and what I personally do) to keep their hair looking good during their trip and long after theyâre home.
âïž The Biggest Factors That Affect Your Hair While Traveling
When youâre somewhere tropical, your hair is dealing with a lot more than usual:
Sun exposure (fades color + dries out hair)
Saltwater (dehydrates + tangles extensions)
Chlorine (can cause discoloration, especially for blondes)
Sunscreen (yes⊠this one is huge and often overlooked)
Individually, these arenât always a big deal. But stacked together over multiple days? Thatâs when you start to notice dryness, dullness, and tangling, especially with extensions.
đ Before You Get in the Water: Do This
This is one of the easiest ways to protect your hair and makes a huge difference.
Wet your hair with clean water first
Add a little leave-in conditioner or oil through your mids + ends
Braid your hair (loose braid or two)
Why this works: Your hair acts like a sponge. If itâs already saturated with clean water + product, it absorbs less saltwater or chlorine.
For extension wearers especially, this step is everything and it helps prevent dryness and matting. (Although as you probably know, ideally youâll want to keep your extensions out of the water when swimming).
𧎠Watch Where Your Sunscreen Goes
This is one of the biggest causes of extension damage that people donât realize.
Sunscreen (especially spray or non-mineral sunscreen) can:
Turn blondes brassy or orange or even can turn blonde extensions pinky
Dry out extensions
Leave buildup thatâs hard to remove
My rule:
Apply sunscreen only after you tie your hair up or braid it and take it down only after you shower off the sunscreen. Use mineral based sunscreens whenever available.
Try to avoid spraying directly near your hairline or part if possible.
đȘź Post-Beach Routine (Donât Skip This)
What you do after the beach matters just as much as before.
Wash your hair as soon as you can
Gently brush through starting at the ends
Use a heavier conditioner than usual to remoisturize
Reapply a leave-in conditioner before brushing
If youâre wearing extensions, never let your hair sit tangled for hours so you can avoid matting.
đ€ Nighttime Care While Traveling
Vacation = long days & late nights⊠I get it.
But this step takes 2 minutes and saves your hair:
Brush your hair out before bed after applying a serum or oil to your ends
Sleep in a loose braid, bun or ponytail
Use a silk or velvet scrunchie if you have one
This keeps everything smooth and manageable, especially if youâre going multiple days between washes.
đ§ââïž When You Get Home: Reset Your Hair as Needed
Once youâre back, your hair will need a little extra love.
I always recommend:
A clarifying treatment either in salon or at home to remove buildup
A deep conditioning mask
A toner refresh if youâre blonde
For my extension clients, this is also a great time for a maintenance appointment if youâre due.
đ€ Final Thoughts
You donât have to choose between enjoying your trip and protecting your hair.
A few small habits can make a huge difference in how your hair looks weeks after your vacation, not just while youâre there.
If you have a trip coming up and want a plan for your hair (extensions, color, or both), Iâm always happy to guide you.
