Thanksgiving tends to come with a lot of photos.
Family pictures, dinner photos, holiday parties, and the inevitable group shot where everyone somehow ends up standing under the least flattering lighting possible.
If you have fine hair or feel like your hair tends to disappear in photos, there are a few ways to make it look noticeably more full without completely changing your look.
And sometimes, the answer isn't actually adding a ton of length.
Why does fine hair look more thin in photos?
Hair can look more flat in photos than it does in real life, especially when:
The ends are thin
Your hair is very straight
You're standing under overhead lighting
Your hair blends into your clothing
There isn't much movement or dimension in the color
Your haircut doesn't have enough density through the perimeter
Photos tend to exaggerate empty space.
That means creating fullness through the ends can make a surprisingly big difference.
Do you need long extensions to make your hair look full?
No.
One of my favorite uses for hair extensions is adding density without adding dramatic length.
If you like your current length but feel like your ends look thin, we can often add a relatively small amount of extension hair and keep everything at your natural length.
The result isn't necessarily:
"She got extensions."
It's more:
"Her hair looks really good."
For clients with fine hair, that can be a much more natural looking transformation. And if you haven’t had extensions before, this is actually the way I recommend trying them out. It doesn't require you to add in much hair, so you’re able to get used to the feeling of extensions without feeling too overwhelmed by them.
What kind of extensions are best for adding volume?
That depends on your natural hair, density, haircut, and where you need fullness.
I work with several extension methods, including:
K-tip extensions
Weft extensions
i-tip or microbead extensions
Tape-in extensions
Combline extensions
Sometimes we just need overall density. Other times, the issue is concentrated around the sides or front of the hair.
The best method is the one that lets us add the right amount of hair in the right places without overwhelming your natural hair.
Can extensions make fine hair photograph better?
They can.
Adding density can improve the overall shape of the hair and help the ends look more substantial in photos.
Extensions can also give you more hair to work with when creating waves, ponytails, half-up styles, or soft holiday styling.
That does not mean you need an enormous transformation.
A subtle amount of fullness can make a major difference.
How should you style your hair for Thanksgiving photos?
If fullness is the goal, I lean toward movement over extremely flat, straight styling.
Soft waves can:
Create visual volume
Help extensions blend with natural hair
Add shape through the ends
Keep the hair from looking flat against the body
You can also try switching your part slightly or adding gentle root volumizing product before styling. Find my favorite on my amazon storefront here.
Does hair color affect how full your hair looks?
It can.
Dimension creates visual movement, which can make hair look fuller.
That's one reason lived-in color and extensions can work so beautifully together.
Instead of one solid block of color, subtle dimension can help create depth throughout the hair.
When extensions are properly color-matched and blended into dimensional color, the result can look especially natural.
What if I only want fuller hair for special occasions?
You don't necessarily need to make a dramatic change. I would initially opt for the clip-in option.
However, if you're considering extensions because your hair consistently feels too thin, not just for one photograph: there are options that can create a fuller everyday result.
The goal in this case should be something that works beyond Thanksgiving dinner.
You should still like your hair when you're going to work, heading to the gym, throwing it into a ponytail, or doing absolutely nothing.
When should you get extensions to be ready for Thanksgiving?
If you're considering a new extension installation, I generally wouldn't recommend waiting until the very last second.
Ideally, you want enough time for:
Your consultation
Color matching
Ordering the hair
Installation
Any small adjustments
Getting comfortable styling your new hair
Giving yourself some breathing room makes the process much more enjoyable.
Fuller hair without looking like you're wearing extensions
Extensions don't always need to create waist length mermaid hair.
Sometimes they're simply there to fill out your ends, add density to fine hair, or help your haircut look the way you wish it naturally did.
For many of my clients, subtle fullness is actually the goal.
